1st International Conference on Technologies for Accessibility and Support for Dependent People
Spain, Bilbao – 10-11 December 2008
This conference was a forum for exchanging knowledge and experience between the different agents of the value chain in the accessible technology and support sector. Some specific objectives addressed at this conference were: finding out first-hand the needs of disabled and elderly people for developing in their daily lives and improving their quality of life, bringing together the different agents involved in the field of accessible technologies and support in order to be able to exchange experiences and contrast the needs with the existing products and systems, identifying challenges and opportunities through the different agents taking part in the conference, and trying out different support products first-hand.

ICT 2008: “I”s TO THE FUTURE
Lyon, France – 25-27 November 2008
The biennial ICT Event (formerly called the “IST Event”) was a forum for discussing research and public policy in information and communication technologies at European level. The Event brought together researchers and innovators, policy and business decision-makers working in the field of digital technologies. The ICT Event presented Europe’s future priorities for research funding in the ICT area and examined crucial issues of public policy for stimulating innovation through ICT development and uptake. It also created opportunities to establish research and business partnerships and enabled attendees to keep up to date in what is happening in various ICT research fields.

Expert meeting on Assistive Technology and Robotics
Brussels, Belgium – 20 October 2008
The Expert Meeting on Assistive Technology and Robotics is included in a series of five Workshops examining the social and ethical implications of specific emerging technologies impacting the elderly in Europe. These technical workshops engaged scientists, ethicists, and policy makers in confronting this range of issues. Ethics and privacy issues in Robotics & Assistive Technology opened discussions on human dignity, non-maleficence, autonomy and individual responsibility, privacy and informed consent, social responsibility, solidarity, equity and equality: all these issues facing robotic applications for the elderly were discussed in this meeting.

Expert meeting on Intelligent User Interface
Brussels, Belgium – 06 October 2008
This was the third in a series of workshops examining the social and ethical implications of specific emerging technologies impacting the elderly in Europe. This workshop examined intelligent user interface from a legal and ethical perspective. As the organization of this event was entrusted to the Legal department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), the workshop devoted attention to the legal dimensions of e-inclusion. Accordingly, the meeting was divided into four panels. These panels addressed the following topics:
- Ethical issues involved with intelligent user interface in smart environments
- Positive obligations in the e-inclusion of the elderly
- The European legal framework of data protection and the principled right to privacy
- Ethical issues of ICT implant s and brain computer interfaces.

Expert meeting on Ubiquitous Communication
Brussels, Belgium – 22 September 2008
The purpose of this meeting was to produce a document, which described the trends within ubiquitous communication and explored in detail the ethical and privacy issues these trends raise. It will focus on ethical and privacy perspectives of ubiquitous communication technologies in relation to senior citizens and ICT for inclusion. This meeting also continued the dialogue that began in the first SENIOR expert workshop in Ubiquitous Computing, which provided a common base for technology trends.

The 6th International Conference of the International Society for Gerontechnology
Pisa, Italy – 04-07 June 2008
This conference is staged about once every three years, and it came back to Europe after nine years. The 6th Conference of the International Society for Gerontechnology – ISG08 – gathered gerontechnology specialists from around the world. ISG08 was a forum where all the people involved in activities dealing with gerontechnology (robotics researchers, architects, biomedical engineers, neuroscientists, biologists, experts in political science and economics, and scientists from many other communities) met and interacted, presented results and discussed future research lines. The theme for the conference was Smart Technology for Active Longevity.

Socio-Anthropological Workshop on ICT and Ageing
Brussels, Belgium – 02-03 June 2008
The objective of this workshop was to examine socio-anthropological themes related to ICT and ageing, and to address the social and cultural meanings of this mega-trend. Three main themes were explored during the socio-anthropological workshop including human-ICT Interaction in the ageing context, techno-animism and homeliness.

Workshop on ethics and e-Inclusion
Bled, Slovenia – 12 May 2008
This workshop analyzed the EU approach to e-inclusion, which is primarily based on moral considerations and ethics. Issues related to younger senior citizens, between 65 and 80 years old, were discussed and consisted of justice, human rights, and privacy and data protection. Ethical concerns relating to senior citizens over 80 years old that were looked at included respect for dignity, right to integrity, and solitude, loneliness and social isolation.

Launching Workshop

This was the launching workshop of the SENIOR project, which is a 24 month support action that aims to provide a systematic assessment of the social, ethical, and privacy issues involved in ICT and Ageing, to understand what lessons should be learned from current technological trends, and to plan strategies for governing future trends.
